Lacquers > 1800 > A big lacquer writing box, Suzuribako, Japan, early Meiji era (1868-1912), around 1880.
A big lacquer writing box, Suzuribako, Japan, early Meiji era (1868-1912), around 1880.
Description: This big Suzuribako, or writing box, is designed to contain the necessary for writing: an inkpot, a brush, paper sheets, other items placed inside the specially made compartments.
Two panels enclose the largest area covered with cloth; they are characterized by the decoration of amaranth lacquer painted in gold with naturalistic motifs: peony, chrysanthemum and Japanese quail, Coturnix japonica.
The Chrysanthemum in Japan is the emblem of the imperial household: the petals remind the sun rays.
The overturn surface covered with cloth hides a compartment for additional material.

The amaranth lacquer is made of overlapping layers of different thickness. They create an alternance of compact and light surfaces.
The background black lacquer is spread on another layer of red lacquer (previously spread on the plain wood surface), visible in transparency at the end of the process.

Age: c. 1880
Dimensions: 4 inc. height; 11 1/2 inc. depth, lenght 15 inc.
